No matter when you are visiting the counties the temperature in cities and mountains can differ a lot. Late spring and early autumn are the best time to take Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan tour. If you travel at this time be prepare that the average temperature in cities can be raised to 30+C or 35+C (day time) and be dropped to 8+C 10+C in mountains.

There is a lot to see and do in Central Asia. You’ll likely be moving from city to city every few days. Besides don’t forget about land border between the countries (if you will not take a flight).

That’s why packing light will help minimize the hassle of unpacking and repacking. Also it will lighten the load when you have to carry your bags in airport, trains and land border. You don’t need much to exploring the countries so a carry on size backpack/bag should be more than enough.

If you start exploring the region from Kyrgyzstan keep in mind that shopping options in mountains are very limited and can only be found in the capital and on Issyk Kul Lake. So it’s extra important to think through what you need to bring before departure.

  • Bathing Suits / Swim Shorts: If you travel in summer and would like to stay on Issyk Kul Lake for some days thus bathing suit is definitely needed. Ladies, please do not forget that you are in Central Asia and it’s better to leave bikinis at home.
  • 2 x Trousers / Jeans: Pack a few pairs of light and breathable trousers for activities like hiking, trekking and city excursions (summer option). For spring and autumn please take comfortable and windproof jeans/trousers.
  • 3-4 T-shirts: light and comfortable T-shirts are a must both for Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
  • 1-2 Long Sleeve Tops: sun is strong in Uzbekistan especially in summer (end of May – early September). Look for lightweight fabrics.
  • 1-2 Evening Outfits: for dinners in restaurants. A simple dress or a pair of casual jeans with a nicer top will do the job.
  • Hiking shoes/sandals: you will need these on a daily basis because most of excursions in Uzbekistan are walking and as for Kyrgyzstan there’re lots of hiking tours in gorges and mountains.
  • Toiletries: take only the essentials, leaving the majority of your make up at home. Hotels and even home-stay, yurt camps offer all necessary. If you need more small convenience stores with basics are available in cities.
  • Electronics: cameras, spare batteries, charging cable, power adapters etc. Please note that internet in yurt camps, small mountains villages in Kyrgyzstan is practically nonexistent. Electricity isn’t an issue, but maybe you will need portable power bank.
  • Sunscreens: sun as in Uzbekistan as Kyrgyzstan is harsh (especially at day time in summer).
  • Day Pack: you’ll be out most of days, so a good day pack is necessary to carry your water, snacks, cameras and other day trip essentials.
